5 Easy Tips to Clean and Maintain Leather

When it comes to buying new furniture there’s always the question of what material to get. With so many upholstery fabric options available, it’s not easy to decide which will fit your needs the best. Leather is a great choice for many reasons – it’s stylish, durable and above all timeless, as long as you know how to clean and maintain it!

Wear and tear is inevitable, however with the proper leather cleaning knowledge, your furniture will look as good as new for years to come! To help you with this, we’ve prepared a short guide that will help you maintain and clean your leather sofa, couch, chair etc.

Maintaining your leather furniture

Before we get into the cleaning part, it’s just as important to know how to preserve and care for your furniture. If you apply the following tips to your leather upholstery, you’ll be able to maintain the stunning new look of your furniture for many years to come.

Furniture placement is key

Since leather is made from animal skin, the placement is more important than with other fabrics. When positioning your furniture, try to avoid placing it under an air conditioner, next to a heater or in direct sunlight. All of these will eventually make the leather dry out, cause cracks and fade out the original colour.

Apply leather conditioner

Applying leather conditioner keeps the material from drying out and stops cracks from forming. You can apply a thin layer to the surface of the couch with a microfiber cloth. Don’t worry, it might sound like a hassle, but doing this once or twice a year will be more than enough to prolong the life of your furniture.

When buying the conditioner, make sure to use a quality brand even if it’s slightly more expensive. You don’t want to end up damaging your sofa by using cheap materials.

It’s always best for stains to be dealt with right away

Blot up spilled water, food, oil or ink as soon as you can before it has time to set. Rubbing alcohol can be carefully used to lift ink stains, and baking soda works well on grease marks.

Cleaning your leather furniture

Cleaning leather furniture isn’t a difficult task, however it takes some prior knowledge and specific items, otherwise you might end up damaging the material. If you follow the few steps we’ve prepared below, cleaning your furniture will be a walk in the park.

Before using any cleaning supplies, grab your vacuum, attach the soft brush attachment and remove any dust and crumbs that might have gathered over time. You should do this every time you vacuum the rest of your house in order to keep the furniture clean.

After you’re done vacuuming, take a microfiber cloth and your detergent of choice. We recommend either using a detergent used for washing delicate clothes or even better – saddle soap, designed specifically for cleaning leather. Using your cloth, apply a small amount of your detergent of choice onto the furniture. Never use paper towels as they can become embedded into the furniture. Also remember to always test your cleaning product on a small, hard to see area, before using it on the entire sofa or chair.

Once you’re done, take another clean cloth and wipe the surface again with cool, clean water. Leave the furniture to dry naturally after.

If after everything you’ve tried, there are still stains or marks left on your sofa, it’s more than likely time to turn towards professional cleaners.

Leather furniture will always be a stylish and long lasting addition to any household as long as you know how to maintain it. With the proper knowhow you’ll easily be able to clean and keep it’s new look. However, sometimes there are stains we simply cannot deal with at home.
