How to clean your mattress and get rid of stains

No matter how well we maintain our bed, mattress stains are inevitable. Even if you use mattress protection they always find a way to appear. Don’t worry! We prepared this article to help you get rid of the annoying stains, keep your mattress clean and fresh.

You can get rid of the stain easier if you clean them while they are fresh. Later on they become engrained deep in the fibres and make the job much harder.

Hoovering a mattress

You can use specific upholstery attachment or use the standard one on your hoover. It is important to hoover your mattress once at least every six months. If you have asthma, do this more regularly. Pay attention to hoover the area near your headboard and along the seam lines. Dust mites and skin flakes are most common dirt on mattresses.

Sleep on a one-sided mattress? Rotate it at least four times a year to keep it strong on the inside. Otherwise, flip your mattress.

Flip your mattress

Flipping or rotating your mattress can significantly increase its lifespan. Many people don’t know it or forget it but it’s important. Different mattresses require different frequency of rotating but a good rule of thumb is to rotate them every five months. This will make your mattress strong and you won’t forget to clean it from both sides.

Don’t wipe or scrub the stain

There is no magic formula to attack your specific mattress stain but there are many things you can do to prevent it from going deep down in the fabric. Instead of wiping which will spread your stain dab up as much of the liquid as possible. Use cloth or a sponge rather than paper towels which can disintegrate.

Stains from bedwetting

Kids are emotional and you never know what surprise they will bring you. Bedwetting is quite a common problem for many parents. It’s always a good idea to put something between the mattress and the sheet to protect it from stains. However if you didnt first blot the mattress, let it dry as much as you can. Then you can try two methods to clean the urine stain.

Tip 1:

  • Мix three tablespoons of baking soda with a cup of hydrogen peroxide and add a few drops of washing liquid until the powder is dissolved
  • Pour everything into a spray bottle, spray over the stain and let it sit for several hours.
  • Put baking soda on the stain so you cover it, after 9 hours hoover it up – if the stain is still there do this again but the smell should disappear from the first time

Tip  2:

  • Spray the stain with a mixture of white vinegar and water in ratio 1:1, leave it for 15 minutes and dabbe it up with a cloth
  • To get rid of the smell sprinkle baking soda, leave it for 5 minutes then hoover it off your mattress

Blood stains

Blood stains are a common problem from children to adults. Usually one of the trickiest mattress stains you’ll need to clean. First thing you need to do is to use cold water! Warm water will help the stain to stick to the fabric permanently. If you can’t clean it only with water try soaking the stain in 3% hydrogen peroxide.

Another trick you can use is to put a few drops of laundry detergent directly on your mattress stain to break down the blood and blot it. If you have dried blood stain it will be much harder to clean it. However you can try putting cloth soaked in cold water over the stain for one hour to dissolve as much blood as possible.

Wine on your mattress

It’s good now and then to surprise our loved ones with breakfast in bed or why not a romantic movie night in bed with a cup of red wine. You will be able to clean the stain if you react immediately. Put sparkling water on the stained area or pour salt on to soak up the wine.

Unknown mattress stains

Not everytime we know what stain we are dealing with. Don’t worry. We have a technique that will help you.

  • Mix washing up liquid with some water and spray it on your stain
  • Let it sit for 7 minutes before blotting it with a cloth
  • Repeat as many times as you need to make the stain disappear

Smell fresh sleep well

Even if your mattress is clean as new without stains you don’t want it to smell bad. The most popular mattress deodoriser is baking soda. It is not only cheap but a natural product. Sprinkle it evenly all over the mattress.

Good trick is to use your sieve to spread it better. If you don’t have one, just use your hands. You will see the results within an hour. But professionals recommend putting a clean sheet over it and leaving the soda on the mattress for one week, before hoovering it up.

It’s always a good idea to put something between the mattress and the sheet to protect it from stains.

No matter how well we maintain our bed, mattress stains are inevitable. Even if you use mattress protection they always find a way to appear. Don’t worry!
