Useful Tips to Prolong the Life of Your Suede Sofa

Who doesn’t like a classy piece of suede furniture in their living room? Suede sofas are a great way to add timeless elegance into your homes. Not only are they classy, but if kept and maintained properly they age beautifully and last for many years.

Many people believe that cleaning and maintaining suede is difficult, however this couldn’t be further from the truth. With a bit of knowledge and the right materials, you’ll easily take care of any stains and prolong the life of your favourite piece of furniture. Before we tell you how to do this, let’s start by quickly explaining what suede exactly is and if it differs from leather. At the end of this guide, we’ll make sure you’re a suede cleaning expert.

What exactly is suede?

Suede is a soft type of leather most commonly used for shoes, clothes, purses and furniture. It is made from the underside of the animal skin which is softer than the outer layer, however certainly not as durable. Leather is more resistant because it is made from the exterior of the animal which more often than not is the protective layer of the animal’s skin.

Maintaining your suede sofa clean

Before we get into cleaning your suede furniture, let’s start off by explaining how you can maintain it and protect it from getting damaged or dirty. If you want to save yourself the hassle of performing big cleanups or calling professional cleaning services, then we have a few tips to help you out.

First of all, make sure to weekly remove the cushions from the couch and carefully vacuum or collect any dirt or crumbs that might have fallen in. After vacuuming, you can use a suede brush to wipe the couch itself. This will remove any remaining dust. Suede brushes can often be found in shoe stores or specialised cleaning stores.

Last but certainly not least, a great way of protecting your suede sofa is applying a layer of scotchguard protection on top of it. This protective spray prevents spillages from penetrating the surface of the household item and doesn’t allow spills to become permanent stains. Furthermore it is incredibly easy to use. All you have to do is apply one layer of invisible coating and let it try off. Once that’s done, the anti-stain layer begins to work.

Cleaning your suede sofa

Occasionally spills and stains do occur and there’s not much we can do to prevent them. Don’t worry, there are ways to clean your furniture and bring it back to its original look. Before you start cleaning, there are a few items you should prepare:

  • Suede furniture cleaner
  • Suede brush
  • A vacuum cleaner
  • Dry sponge
  • Microfiber cloth
  • Sandpaper

Depending on the type of stain, a different approach should be taken. If you’re dealing with a spill or a wet stain you should take care of it as soon as possible to stop it from spreading or settling in the material. Start by gently blotting the area in order to extract as much of the liquid as possible. Then moisten a clean cloth with suede cleaner and gently rub the area with small circular motions. Let the area dry off and finish it off by polishing it with your suede brush.

If you’re dealing with dry stains you’ll have to start off by gently brushing the area with your suede brush. This will remove any loose dirt. If the stain is persistent, take some sandpaper and gently scrub the affected area. It is important to not use too much force as you might damage the surface of your sofa.
